Personal Statement – Who am I?

Who am I? What do I want to become?

At present I am studying Graphic Design and the reason for this is a….

I have always been a very indecisive person. Through out school I followed a trend of excelling in Mathematics, Science, Art and design. So this lead me to take these courses on further to A-Level but I became lost and my decisions changed. Still following my love for Art and Design I moved to a foundation course. Here I was given the opportunities to experiment and discovered new interests, however during the second year I stuck to my original passion and focused on Graphic design. Now progressing with Graphics at University; I have now studied Graphic design at three different institutes, each time taught very differently resulting in many different forms of inspiration. It was for this reason I decided to continue with Graphic Design. As much as for one reason it can be progressed onto many different industries; from illustration to advertising for example, leaving my career options still open. It is also a subject in which I feel I will never stop learning from. To a form in which I can understand, I enjoy learning. Design involves so much as a subject but also in reality. Everything created consists of some form of design, and everything designed usually gets developed; there fore, is a design ever finished? I don’t think so.

As much as I would say that this project (Ten/Measurement) has been one of the most challenging briefs I have  worked on. I would certainly say it has had a very substantial effect on me. The sheer size of the project encouraged me to make and progress with decisions, and also helped me to develop my knowledge and skills within computer graphics. Up until now I have found working with software such as the Adobe Suite quite challenging as I only came across it towards the end of college, having been taught on different software previously to that. Discovering this software at such a late stage within my education has resulted in me almost completely having to teach myself how to use it. This project however gave me the time and the encouragement to work progressively within the programs to design and develop my ideas. This taught me that it does indeed take practice and over time it will become familiar and I feel that my next brief will almost certainly benefit from this.

To answer the question, Who am I? As a designer, I’m not sure. I feel I am still trying to find myself within the world of design. I feel that this project has had both a positive and a negative effect on me. In a negative way I still don’t quite believe in myself and there fore lack in confidence with my work. Although positively I have discovered a lot from this project; whether it being influenced by new and different designers and design movements or developing my skills over a wider area. I know that I will continually learn from the industry, even when I choose upon a career, but right now I feel I have so much more to discover there fore it would be incorrect to say ‘Who am I’ as I am forever changing my mind but the more I learn the more confident I become, consequently becoming a more decisive person.

Alan Aldridge Books…

Alan Aldridge – The Man with Kaleidoscope Eyes

31o0uuqw3hl_sl500_aa180_
This illustrated biography charts Aldridges life as a graphic entertainer, with paintings and drawings covering his whole career from 1964 right up to the present. Interspersed in some 250 colour illustrations are stories and anecdotes about those who Aldridge encountered along the way, among them Picasso, the Queen and Salvador Dalí.

Alan Aldridge symbolizes the spirit of the 60s and 70s. His psychedelic images are a perfect example of the feeling and art of that era. As The Beatles lead the charts, it was Aldridge’s designs and visual identity that defined The Beatles image and music. Still busy creating today, Aldridge is an artist, an illustrator, a graphic designer, art director and film maker.
He masterminded the seminal art book The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics.

As Art Director at Penguin, Aldridge produced ground-breaking covers.
He also had commissions for The Rolling Stones, Elton John and illustrations for the award-winning children’s book The Butterfly Ball and The Grasshoppers Feast, the first complete retrospective of Aldridge’s work in the UK.

Aldridge’s career to date, from the early 60s when his whirling designs refreshed the somber tone of Penguin book covers, to his collaborations with The Beatles and their Apple record company, through to serving as creative director to the original Hard Rock Cafe is being exhibited at the design museum now. Commissions from Andy Warhol, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Elton John and The House of Blues will also be on display alongside photographs, sketch books and illustrations from his seminal children’s books. Visit soon as it won’t be on display forever.

Local Sports Photographers…

Over the past couple of years, whilst becoming interested in mountain biking, me and the guys also developed an interest for sports photography. As some rode, photography came a form of documentation and a way of advertising the team. It worked out well that some found a hidden talent in photography and there fore invested in pricey equipment. Here is some of their work which can also be found on http://www.pinkbike.com/  , which is a biking photography blog.

Victor Lucas

Victor Lucas is a freelance photographer and journalist, specializing in mountain biking and adventure sports, for magazines and commercial clients worldwide.

‘Although I’m based in Ireland, I travel so often that my real home is my rucksack. My summers are really hectic, chasing around the globe to capture the highs and lows of mountain biking’s premier racing and freeride events. Winter is a little more relaxed and I try to get away to interesting locations that have opportunities for inspiring photos and stories. It’s also a good time to ride my bike and avoid the cold, dark and damp Irish winter!’

‘My background is in visual design, but I got frustrated with the daily routine behind a desk and decided to change it for the chance to explore the great outdoors and capture images of inspiring subjects. The things that get me excited are passionate people, amazing places and the adrenalin pumping action of sports like mountain biking, bmx, skiing and snowboarding.’
